If you haven’t heard, shock jock Don Imus has been suspended for racially charged comments against the Rutgers Women Basketball Team. I really don’t want to get into it because it seems to happen every few months. A white guy will be doing his job and then boom!!! He goes on a racially charged tirade, or makes a slick racial comment. It just seems that it happens too frequently. Instead of just suspending Imus make him pay for damages. And no I don’t mean that the Rutgers players will receive from Imus, no I mean that Imus will need to provide a substantial scholarship to African American youth, and it doesn’t matter to me if the check is used for general students or make it specific to African American students at Rutgers. This would be a much more beneficial to the African American culture than an apology from a man that most people knew nothing about until a few days ago.

Here is my next problem with the entire situation…Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Why? Are these two the only voice for the African American community? I for one am getting tired of them being the “experts” and “voice of the community” for every news worthy situation that buzzes the air waves. I know of their past accomplishments but where is the leadership within this generation? I can tell you where the are: they are being stifled by the camera hogging, media-loved Jackson and Sharpton. Yes it is good that they are still around, but we need some new leaders, new voices, and fresh ideas to come into the field. So media, I implore you to look at others beside the eloquent Al Sharpton and the refined Jesse Jackson. Believe me there are more than that duo that have clear and coherent statements to express the sentiments and views of the African American community.
